History of the Scholarship

The James Cox Memorial Scholarship

James (Jim) Cox was born in Middle Claydon on 16 August 1911. He remained for the whole of his life in Buckinghamshire, except for the war years where he served in Burma, was schooled at Aylesbury Grammar School and practised as an architect under the name of James Cox Associates in Rickfords Hill, Aylesbury where his son Howard carries on the Practice.

Jim joined Rotary in 1952 where he was a member for more than 50 years serving as President in 1959/60. He was also appointed a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow on 22 December 2003 for his work as a Rotarian.

The Scholarship, set up in memory of Jim Cox, is designed as a series of annual awards to assist people up to the age of 25 years who have left full time secondary school education to further their educational aims. Applicants must have either completed their education in, or normally reside at the time of application in, Aylesbury or within 7.5 miles of St Mary’s Church of Aylesbury. Applicants must also have had some past connection with Rotary such as Youth Speaks, Technology Tournament, Carol Float, Young Chef, Group Study Exchange, Essay Competition, Youth Travel or any other bona fide connection of any kind.
